Silas informed you that godly artifacts like the mask will eventually reform if someone manages to destroy it by conventional means, usually near those the artifact's creator would want to have them (Tiamat's servants in this case, exactly the people you're trying to get the thing away from).

He went on to mention that some of his peers had devised a method to destroy it permanently, but that the ritual required, among other things, blood from one of Tiamat's avatars, none of which have walked the world since her imprisonment. Hence, the mask remained protected in the vaults of metallic dragons for several centuries before being stolen.

So, destroying it might be a last ditch effort if given no other options, but it is likely to be at best a delaying tactic.
